1936 - The Bishop of Maribor Franc Kramberger, aged 58.a full Lavantine-Maribor bishop, was born on 7th October 1936 in the parish of Sveti Lenart in Slovenske gorice. After finishing Maribor’s gymnasium and theological faculty in Ljubljana he was ordained a priest on 29th June 1960. After the new mass he was chaplain in the Maribor parish Church Sv. Rešno Telo for four years. Then for 7 years he carried out the work as a prefect. He served for eight years as the principal of the Slomšek theological seminary. Whist doing this work he studies and in 1971 at the Theological Faculty in Ljubljana he defended his doctoral dissertation “Osrednje teološke resnice v Slomškovem oznanjevanju”.
On 10th November 1980 he was named as Maribor’s bishop, he was ordained in Maribor’s cathedral on 21st December 1980. As bishop he carried out several important duties: 1st May 1990 he became the President of the Slovenian Karitas, he is a patron of the Mohor’s Society in Celje, President of the Commission at the Slovene Bishop’s Conferences, from the year 2004 he has also been the President of the Slovene Bishop’s Conference.
7th April 2006 the Maribor diocese was made an archdiocese, and consequently Kramberger became the first Archbishop of the Archdiocese, at the same time the metropolis of Maribor was established, as such Kramberger also took on the duties of metropolitan.
On the 3rd November 2006 the President of Slovenia Dr. Janez Drnovšek awarded Kramberger with the Republic of Slovenia’s Golden Order for exceptional services.
