Stroll through Maribor's central commercial streets and experience the colourful and vivacious image of the city centre! In old, but beautifully renovated buildings there are numerous small shops and locals with a variety of offers, and for sure you will come across a street musician, puppeteer or friendly flower seller.
Architectonic points of interest
Interesting architectonic points can be found on house number 11, which has a portal dating from the year 1796, and house number 5 an interesting façade painted with motifs of the seasons of the year.
On the north side end both the streets Gosposka ulica and Slovenska ulica. On the corner stands a bank on the spot where until 1938 stood the house where the Austrian Admiral Wilhelm Tegetthoff was born.
The neighbouring house, Gosposka 31, was from 1820 to around 1835 the residence of Archduke Johann Hapsburg, who was also called the Styrian archduke, who is greatly credited for the economic and cultural development of Štajerska. Shortly after his death in 1858 his residence was made into a hotel, and called Hotel Archduke Johann, after the end of the First World War the Slovene Reading Society was housed here. Also a monument to Archduke Johann once stood in the Maribor's park, but today is on display on the arcade of the Regional Museum.
Hotel Uni
On the corner of passageway Volkmerjev prehod, in which there is a memorial pillar erected in memory of the resistance of Maribor's youths, who on 29th April 1941 set fire to two German automobiles, stands Hotel Uni. In the building you can see a plastic, which in our region are rare. An experienced sculptor from the 18th century created the statue of Mary, who with a devoted, bowed head kneels on the world and pushes to the earth a rising dragon.
