1860 - 1903The composer Hugo Wolf was born in 1860. Both parents had Slovenian ancestors. Along with the expansion of the leather craft and climb on the social scale the family underwent the process of Germanisation. The Vouks, as they were named until they arrived to Slovenj Gradec, found it easier to establish themselves in the predominantly German town with the Germanized family name of Wolf.
Hugo Wolf, who gained world renown in Vienna, the then music capital of Europe, spent his childhood in Slovenj Gradec. Little Hugo was considered a prodigious child. He was a consummate violinist. When he shone in the Viennese music circles, he was lauded as the incomparable composer of solos. His life was cut short by a pathologic insanity. In 1903 the composer's mother commissioned a painted window in memory of her son, which still adorns the south side of the parish church.
