At the beginning of the 18th century the inhabitants of the town of Maribor erected a memorial in Grajski trg dedicated to St Florian, the patron saint of fire, floods and natural catastrophes, as a remembrance to fires that repeatedly devastated the town. The Baroque figure is supposed to protect the city from fires, which in the past represented a great danger.
