The Football Club Maribor is the biggest sports club in the city of Maribor and the most successful football club in Slovenia.
The club was founded in the year 1960, after five years of playing in the then first Yugoslav league at the end of the 1960s and at the beginning of the 70s it achieved its greatest success precisely at the turn of the century. Seven successive state champion titles and five challenge cup laurels in an independent Slovenia brought FC Maribor recognition as the best club in the present history of Slovenia. For all the inhabitants of Maribor the year 1999 will remain unforgettable when the “vijoličasti“, as the FC Maribor team is called, sensationally took their place in the Champions League and were inscribed on the football map of Europe.
FC Maribor's mission
As the city's biggest sports club we vigilantly care for the education of young footballers. Within the frame of the club there is a football school, where under the guidance of ten trainers 220 young footballers from the age of 8 to 18 train. FC Maribor selections participate in state and international matches and tournaments, selections from 14 years of age upwards reap great successes in state championships, where they are regularly placed among the 3 best teams in Slovenia. During the last few years we have spread the football school activities to primary schools in the form of circles, where as part of the Children's Football School around 300 of the youngest footballers train.
